Speaking

We try to spend as much time as we can in front of people talking with them about topics like experience design, UI, development and others.

Sometimes you’ll find one or more of us in front of large crowds at conferences. But we’re equally at home addressing a college class, a professional organization, or a client workshop.

Whenever we have the chance to speak somewhere, we’ll talk about the experience here and if it’s a conference, we’ll probably even tell you how to register. If you’ve seen any of us speak somewhere and have written about it, let us know. We’d love to include your posts here, too.

Oh, and if you’d like us to come speak to your company or at your conference, please feel free to contact us and we’ll set it up.

Workshop: “Beyond Blah Blah” at EdUI

David Poteet will be teaching the full-day version of Beyond Blah Blah: Creating Great Content for the Web at EdUI on September 21st. In this workshop we take lessons we've learned and the best tips from our favorite experts to teach you how to:

  1. Figure out what content people want in the first place. Learn how to use Mental Models, KJ sessions, Carewords surveys, search logs and more to uncover top audience goals, then organize and prioritize your content.
  2. Use words that smell like…

Workshop: Web Design Without Politics

I gave a presentation at Eduweb in Chicago in July 2009 titled "Web Design Without Politics." I showed 6 techniques we've learned or developed to help a group of people from across an institution plan their website together in a short period of time. And not fight about it later.

I'll be teaching it again in September at EdUI in Charlottesville, VA.

12 Things I Learned at the Creative Unconference

The agenda wall

The agenda wall

Brian, Dave and I drove to New York May 7-8 for the Creative Unconference. I'm now permanently ruined for traditional conference formats. I filled several pages of notes and I thought I'd share some tidbits I took away from the event.

Guest Lecturing at Radford

Somehow I had to make this interesting.

Somehow I had to make this interesting.

Glenn and I visited Emanuel Arnold's Web design class at neighboring Radford University Monday evening to talk about what our web development and production processes are. After about a thirty minute overview of what it takes to design and build a web site, his class surprised me with just under an…

David and Pamela’s Eduweb 2008 Presentation

Pamela Michael, Head of Digital Media and Marketing at Imperial College London, and I had the privilege of presenting this week at Eduweb 2008 in Atlantic City. It was held at the lovely (cough, cough) Trump Marina Casino.

We shared a case study from the Imperial College London website redesign, including how we researched the needs of various audiences and created mental models that guided our designs.

"I went expecting the typical Blah Blah Blah for four hours hoping I would glean at least one or two pieces of information that would be helpful.

I was completely blown away! Every single piece of information was on point and beyond useful."

- Attendee, Beyond Blah Blah workshop at CSU East Bay
