Tales of dysfunction and success

As Dave Perks mentioned, the two of us have been discussing technical and creative mindsets. I've worked in a lot of places where technical and creative staff have pushed each other away, to the point where there's maybe only one point of contact between the two departments.

As a result, the idea people have to allocate resources for tasks they don't understand, and they feel like they lose control of the solution. The implementation people feel like they've lost control of the resources and rarely understand why they're asked to solve the problems they have.

NewCity has been trying to go the opposite way. Our creative staff has been getting more technical, our technical staff has been getting more creative. We're working more closely together than ever before, and the results so far have been very promising.

But I'd like to hear some stories from you. I'd like to hear about projects you worked on that went very well. What went right? What was the experience like for you?

I'd like to hear the same thing about projects that didn't turn out so well. Where did things go wrong?

And in either case, how did the team work? Was it a close team, or did people operate at arms length?

Leave stories in the comments below or send them to me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). I'll keep emailed stories private until I talk to you about what parts I can share with other people. And please ask your friends to submit stories, too — the more the better.

Thanks!

  • The office I work in definitely seems to be in a top-down segregation of creative and technicals. I am a creative, but work with the technical team and have never worked with the marketing or analysis team as long as I’ve been with the company (going on a year). The technical team works very well together, but expectations of the creative side are always unrealistic because there’s little transparency in our processes. It’s tough, believe me.
    Great post!
