David Poteet

President

David keeps NewCity pointed in the right direction, focusing on how we apply human-centered design (HCD) to complex organizational goals and digital challenges.

In addition to his role as president, he grows new client relationships and works on a handful of projects each year as a strategist, user experience architect, content strategist or service designer. He loves to teach and coach, inspiring people with the power of HCD. He’s an expert facilitator, cat herder, and frequent conference speaker.

In 1995 David had the crazy notion to start a company that was the sort of place where he’d always wanted to work. A place without a lot of hierarchy or politics, where you worked closely with people at the top of their craft to create things that make the world better. Today NewCity is that place.

David graduated with honors from Virginia Tech in 1992 with a BA in Art concentrating on design and communication. He minored in German. It only took six years! The first two and a half years he spent studying aerospace engineering weren’t wasted, since he learned enough programming and technical problem-solving to be dangerous. He had no idea the web would be born only a year later, which was the perfect medium for a half artist/half geek.

David is active with several non-profit organizations, serving on the board of the Public Lands Alliance, volunteering with Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway and as an Assistant Scoutmaster. He’s an elder in his church and spends part of every summer working with the YXL youth leadership conference in Colorado.

Outside the office David enjoys hiking, biking, running, skiing, board games, guitar and enjoying a good beer with friends. David and his wife Tish have two awesome children, who’ve been enjoying a lot more time in national parks since their dad got involved with public lands.

My favorite part of my job is growing teams, equipping them to do amazing work, and seeing the results. I love to fuel people's passion.
